There’s a reason why we swear so easily in foreign languages. In our mother tongue, we learn rules and restrictions. We’re limited by the emphasis on the accuracy of language, so we’re afraid to play with it in writing. It is liberating to write in second languages, where we can unlearn and relearn that literature is somewhere you can allow your multiple linguistic tendencies to clash together. A writer in a recent session of my advanced poetry workshop shared her experience writing in English as a French native speaker. “Dress the table,” a French expression unconsciously slipped in when she wrote, and this imagery turns out to be gorgeous to me. In Ars Literica, I have found new friends who share the same passion for multilingual writing.
